    Spotify vs. Rhapsody

If you like having a large music library then listen up, because we’ve got something in common. Are you a fan of having to pay for every downloaded song you want? If you love music, you’ll love subscription music services. Think of Rhapsody and Spotify like Netflix. You can stream virtually any song or album you want in the world for a low monthly price of $9.99. It’s Face Off time, so cue the music baby. Spotify vs. Rhapsody!

    Spotify

    Founded: 2006
Free Trial: Yes (6 months w/ads)
    Cost: $9.99/month
    Offline Mode: Yes
Compatibility: Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, BlackBerry
Desktop App: Yes (Mac & Windows)

    Rhapsody

    Founded: 2001
    Free Trial: Yes (14 days)
    Cost: $9.99/month
    Offline Mode: Yes
Compatibility: Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, BlackBerry
    Desktop App: Yes (Windows Only)

    Round One – Features

While both services are pretty straight forward as a way to have the entire music catalog of the world at your fingertips, they each have their own little nuances and special features. They both can make a radio station based on artists you like and they both allow you to create playlists! What I like about Spotify is how it syncs effortlessly through all your devices. Rhapsody will only sync from a computer to ONE device. Also, Spotify has a desktop app for both Mac & PC which is nice because Rhapsody only has one for PC. And in the Spotify software there are a bunch of mini apps, one which will turn your music into a karaoke song equipped with all the words! Too cool! This round goes to Spotify based on their mini apps selection.

    Round Two – Social

I grew up in the late 80s/early 90s. The era of the mix tape. A friend would hear a song, record it on a tape and pass it around like a hot potato. Now we share music in a completely different way. With the click of a button our song is shared with hundreds of our Facebook friends. If you’re big on sharing music with your friends, via social media, about the tunes you’re rocking, then you’ll love Spotify. While both services work with social media, Spotify has a much nicer interface to seamlessly link your Facebook or Twitter account to your Spotify account. Rhapsody’s interface just seems a bit clunky and outdated to me.

    Round Three – Offline Mode

Where Spotify seems to fall behind is their offline mode. What is offline mode? It’s when your phone doesn’t have a wireless signal, (WiFi or Cellphone Network), like when it’s in “Airplane Mode” or maybe you’re having some really spotty service. If you happen to lose connectivity you can still play downloaded songs or full albums you have. You see Rhapsody can download music within the app so you can listen to it whenever you want. I know Spotify does the same, but it only downloads your songs into a playlist. I like how Rhapsody will save them as playlists, full albums, individual songs…it doesn’t matter. You get to choose! It makes searching for a specific song much easier since Rhapsody’s offline mode works a lot like your phone’s music library.

    WINNER

    Round Four – Overall

While both services are a fantastic, LEGAL way to listen to all the music you want, we still need to choose a winner.  And this time Spotify just slightly edges out Rhapsody as the best subscription based music service out there. The way Spotify easily integrates with your Facebook account, has tons of different apps to make the experience better and the fact that they have a program that will work on a Mac or PC is just awesome.

While Spotify was the winner today, the real winner is the music industry. These services have developed a better way for people to get music and pay for it. In fact the music industry has started picking up their numbers again. People are starting to pay for music again, crazy right? No matter which service you choose, Rhapsody or Spotify, you’ll enjoy them both.  In fact, a music subscription service helped me love music again.

    WINNER
