Blake Lively, the actress, model and celebrity homemaker, who describes herself as a “foodie and a cook,” is the All American, California surfer girl. Interestingly enough she’s been cast as the star (a surfer) in her new movie “The Shallows,” but more on that later.
Lively began her acting career at age 10, in the indie-budget 1998 film “Sandman.” The film, which was directed by her father, gave Lively her first taste of being an actress. Seven long years later she starred as Bridget “Bee” Vreeland in the novel-adapted film, “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.”
“Sisterhood was really my big break into Hollywood,” says Lively. “After that film, things kinda just fell into place. I was in ‘Accepted,’ ‘Sisterhood 2,’ a bunch of other films and then Gossip Girl called.”
Lively starred as Serena van der Woodsen in the teen-drama TV show, Gossip Girl on The CW. “It was awesome to do Gossip Girl because it all took place in New York. I was born in California and lived there most of my life. It was nice to be on the East Coast.”
While Gossip Girl had an amazing six season run, the show eventually ended and Lively moved right back into the Hollywood limelight.
“It was kinda cool to start in film, move to TV, then move back into film. Most people either start in TV and get typecast and can never do film. Or maybe they do film and think, ‘Oh I’m too big to do TV.’ It’s rare that someone can start in film, move to TV and then go back to Hollywood. I’m very grateful to have that on my resume.”
Since Gossip Girl, Lively has gone on to star in some great films like “Savages,” “The Age of Adaline,” and “Green Lantern.”
“Green Lantern was awesome, because it’s where I met Ryan [Reynolds],” says Lively.
The two met in 2010 on the set of “Green Lantern,” and began dating in October 2011. They did couple things. You know, partied late, went to brunch and bought a home together. Wow. They move fast! The two eventually married in 2012 and have one daughter together, James (yes that’s her name), born in December 2014. And just recently, the two announced they are expecting their second child! Baby bumps everywhere these days in Hollywood!
“It’s awesome being married to my best friend. I think that’s important. To establish friendship first with your lover before anything intimate. It really helps you learn a lot about each other.”
Lively’s newest film, “The Shallows,” is due out soon. She obviously filmed it before the baby was conceived, so don’t get any crazy ideas.
The terrifying trailer has hit the Internet and seems pretty thrilling. Think of it as a “Castaway” meets “Jaws.” Yep. Nancy (Lively) is surfing by herself, which already seems like trouble, and crashes on a small rock. She’s just a mere 200 yards from the shore, but she can’t swim back to it because there is a great white shark circling the rock she is standing on. Now, survival will prove to be the ultimate test of wills, ingenuity, resourcefulness and fortitude. And yes, the cast is pretty small. We’re talking like maybe four people in the whole movie!
That’s where we get the “Castaway” similarities from. The entire film is literally centered around one person. It’s Blake Lively doing her best Leo impression in the “Revenant,” except with a shark.
“The Shallows” is out in theaters June 29, and yes while it looks campy, it’s probably best not to watch it before your next trip to the beach.
