Top 10 Best Smart Home Devices of 2016
Homes just seem to be getting smarter and smarter everyday. It seems whenever I turn on Shark Tank someone has a new idea to make your home safer, more efficient and well let’s be real, more cool. Here are 10 of the best smart home devices for 2016 that you can get right now! Here’s the best way to make your home, a smart home.
1. Belkin Wemo Switch
The WeMo Switch is available for only $39.99, and is the perfect way to turn any plug in your home into a smart plug. The Belkin WeMo Switch will allow you to turn electronic devices on or off from anywhere in the world. The Switch hooks up with your home’s WiFi network, and you simply download a free App which will allow you to turn on and off any plug. Hard to reach places that have plugs? This would be perfect. I’m looking at you Christmas lights hanging outside my house.
2. Nest Learning Thermostat
While there are a couple smart thermostats out there, we believe the Nest is still at the top of the list. And with a price of $249, it definitely reflects. It has a large display, a beautiful user interface and now works with Amazon Alexa. The Nest App is so cool. Say you’re taking a long weekend trip to the beach. Well you don’t want your AC to run all weekend? So you turn it off. But now you can turn it on on your way home, so when you arrive it isn’t sweltering hot.
3. August Smart Lock/Homekit Enabled
I’m neurotic. When I leave my house I always wonder, “Wait, did I lock the front door?” Now you don’t have to anymore with the August Smart Lock. The new August Smart Lock second gen model can deadbolt lock your front door directly from your smart phone. It costs $227 and is pretty easily installed. Plus it works with Siri through Apple’s HomeKit software. Now if only we can get it to work with Amazon Echo!
4. Skybell HD Wi-Fi Video Doorbell
Never wonder who’s at the front door anymore when they ring your doorbell. With 1080p resolution, SkyBell is the perfect way to not have to answer the door to those pesky door-to-door salesmen. While the $199 price tag is steep for a doorbell, it does offer FREE online storage of video. And it works with Amazon Alexa!
5. Nest Protect
The second generation Nest Protect looks better and has more functions than any other smoke/carbon monoxide detector on the market. It runs $99, which might be a little pricey for a smoke detector, but when your family’s life is on the line, price shouldn’t matter! The Nest Protect has an industrial-grade smoke sensor, tests itself automatically and will last up to a decade. One of the coolest parts, it’ll talk to you telling you exactly where the smoke is coming from!
6. Canary Home Video Security
The Canary is an all-in-one home security system that you can control from your smart phone. First off, yes it has a camera. Second, yes it has audio. Third, and most importantly, it’s built to learn and can send you intelligent alerts with HD video and audio directly to your phone. Plus, you can even set off its fairly loud alarm with a push of a button on your phone. Keep your home safe! Also it works as a good monitor if you ever have a babysitter over, or leave the kids alone at the house for the weekend. Price? Only $199!
7. Amazon Echo
More than a year after it’s debut, the Amazon Echo is smarter than ever. It is one of the best connected home products that you can currently buy, and at $179.99, it’s hard to argue with the price. The voice-activated, blue-tooth speaker is not only futuristic (think of the Jetsons) but it’s practical. It’s like having Siri on a speaker, except it works with Amazon and by linking it to your Amazon account you can have it order you a new pair or socks or another box of your favorite cookies. Even if you don’t need the cool voice-activated features, it makes for a great BlueTooth speaker!
8. Phillips Hue Wireless Dimming Kit
Here’s an awesome wireless switch that works directly out of the box. You don’t need an electrician or any installation. It’s the perfect way to make any lightbulbs in your home, dimmable. You just screw in the bulb and put the included remote nearby and you’re done. Seriously. Plus you can connect up to 10 Phillips Hue bulbs to the system. The dimming kit is available for only $34.99. The bulbs are only $15. Oh, did we mention it works with Amazon Alexa, too? “Alexa, turn on the lights in the kitchen.”
9. Roomba 980
By now you’ve probably heard of a Roomba. It’s a self-cleaning robot vacuum. It works on a timer, and will go around your entire house vacuuming. It’s pretty incredible. The new Roomba gives you cleaner floors and has a new AeroForce Cleaning system to help you get the most out of your rug. Nice pun, right? Plus, there’s now a Roomba iRobot Home App, where you can change things on it instantly. The Roomba 980 is $899.99.
10. GE Cafe Series Fridge
The GE Cafe Series fridge is an incredible fridge. Seriously, this fridge can make you a cup of coffee with the Keurig K-Cup brewing system, and is reasonably priced for a fridge. You can find some for as low at $2,300. Just make sure to shop around a little before settling.
