The Distinctive Wines of Jonata
Jonata is a simple word with a simple meaning: “Tall oaks.” The Chumash Indians pioneered the word for all the tall oaks they saw in the land. Now the term has taken on a whole new meaning and has become a lot more complex. From winemaker Matt Dees comes some of the best wines California has ever produced.
The Low Down
The Hilt, The Pairing, and Jonata are all excellent wines that have strong ratings from critics everywhere. Robert Parker’s ‘The Wine Advocate’ recently rated two of the Jonata wines at an impressive 97 points. But what else would you expect from Screaming Eagle’s sister winery (which literally has an online form to fill out to be on a waiting list)?
If you don’t want to dish out that serious cash you’ve been working so hard for, Jonata can fit the bill. Owned by the same folks that own Screaming Eagle, Matt Dees spearheads the winemaking of its little sister. Dees knows how to maximize the tannin structures while maintaining a focus on the Bordeaux and Rhone blends. Jonata is an unconventional wine that comes from an unconventional bright mind.
El Desafio de Jonata
Don’t expect a huge price tag on these wines because they are reasonably priced. What you can expect is a big profile and a huge wine that is exciting to drink and ready to blow your mind. Tannins that are well structured and balanced. Acidity that’s perfect for steak but mellow enough for fish. A bouquet that is rich and complex with notes of dark chocolate, cassis, tobacco, cedar, and a subtle smoky flavor that makes this silky wine seductive and easy to enjoy.
